Faecal incontinence, also known as bowel incontinence, is a debilitating condition that if not managed effectively can lead to healthcare-associated infections and presents a major challenge for the safe and comprehensive care of acute and critically ill patients in hospitals and care homes.

When established as diarrhoea, the effects of faecal incontinence can range from mild skin irritation to more serious conditions including severe perineal dermatitis, altered water absorption in the intestinal tract, infection transmission, and sepsis. Faecal incontinence can also be a significant risk factor in the transmission of C. difficile and Norovirus.  This can then lead to contamination across the entire patient care environment including the patient’s family and visitors.

An effective faecal management system (FMS) can significantly help decrease the risk of infection transmission by providing more effective containment. It aids in keeping the skin clean, dry, and free from contaminants and moisture that contribute to skin breakdown that can lead to pressure ulcers, while also preventing contamination of the patient care environment.  The potential spread of infection is significantly minimised by keeping infectious body waste contained in a closed system during application and ongoing use.

The potential financial benefits of better faecal management include reducing the cases of pressure ulcers, lowering the risk of nosocomial transmission, reducing costs related to nursing time and associated medical consumables, as well as decreasing the cost to address clinical complications.

ProSys International Ltd offer two closed faecal management solutions and associated consumables which are compatible with both these systems.

The cost of a longer stay in hospital due to C. difficile associated disease
is estimated to be circa £4,000 per case

Patients with faecal incontinence are three times more likely to develop
pressure ulcers than those who are continent
